Turnips and a Poem

Nov 4, 2014

What's in this week's basket?

If it weren't for the snow on the ground at Brightside, I'm not sure I would believe it: November has arrived!  Our final delivery, which will include turkeys, will occur on November 25th.

As the season draws to a close, we're looking forward to surprising you with items you haven't yet seen in your baskets.
This week, we expect to have pumpkins, pears, green tomatoes, onions, turnips, cabbage, mesclun greens and more!
Fresh turnips are delightfully crisp and surprisingly sweet peeled, diced and added to salad. But one of my favorite ways to cook them is as a substitute for mashed potatoes. Just replace half to three-quarters of the potatoes in your favorite mashed potato recipe with peeled, cooked and mashed turnips.  A little chopped fresh sage adds a gourmet touch!
November  by William Cullen Bryant
Yet one smile more, departing, distant sun!
One mellow smile through the soft vapoury air,
Ere, o'er the frozen earth, the loud winds ran,
Or snows are sifted o'er the meadows bare.
One smile on the brown hills and naked trees,
And the dark rocks whose summer wreaths are cast,
And the blue Gentian flower, that, in the breeze,
Nods lonely, of her beauteous race the last.
Yet a few sunny days, in which the bee
Shall murmur by the hedge that skim the way,
The cricket chirp upon the russet lea,
And man delight to linger in thy ray.
Yet one rich smile, and we will try to bear
The piercing winter frost, and winds, and darkened air.
