The road in the center of the photo is the Camp Allegheny Backway, a 12-mile segment of the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike, which is a National Scenic Byway--one of only 126 such roads in the nation.
The Camp Allegheny Battlefield lies on both sides of the road and is managed by the United States Forest Service (USFS). The portion above the road is owned by the USFS, while the portion below the road, which includes the most well-preserved trenches and gun emplacements, is privately owned.
